Lyons Spoke on Avoiding Harassment & Discrimination Claims at NJBIA Seminar

ROSELAND, N.J., October 5, 2010 --- Connell Foley partner M. Trevor Lyons was a featured presenter at the New Jersey Business & Industry Association’s (NJBIA) “How to Comply with Discrimination and Harassment Laws” seminar held on September 24, 2010 at the Wilshire Grand Hotel, West Orange, New Jersey.

Lyons in his presentation first noted the explosion in discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims in recent years, and then explained the important legal principles that human resource professionals and management representatives must understand in order to deal with discrimination in the workplace, including:

  • what harassment is and how to stop it

  • when and how discrimination occurs

  • how to draft and communicate effective policies

  • how to conduct training

  • how to handle employee complaints and investigate claims thoroughly

  • how to protect the company with proper documentation

  • what to expect if an employee files a charge or lawsuit

Lyons also provided practical legal strategies and key information for managers, giving them the “tools” needed to protect their employees and the company from workplace harassment and discrimination.

Lyons has focused his practice in the areas of labor and employment law on behalf of management in the private and public sectors. Lyons provides employers with pro-active and preventative counseling on personnel and benefit issues.  He defends employers in litigation in state and federal courts and before state and federal administrative agencies.  Lyons also represents employers during contract and grievance arbitrations and collective bargaining negotiations, defends unfair labor practice charges, and conducts employee disciplinary appeal hearings.
