Lyons Spoke on Avoiding
Harassment & Discrimination Claims at NJBIA Seminar

M. Trevor Lyons was a featured presenter at the New
Jersey Business & Industry Association’s (NJBIA) “How to
Comply with Discrimination and Harassment Laws” seminar held
on September 24, 2010 at the
Wilshire Grand Hotel,
West Orange, New Jersey.
Lyons in his
presentation first noted the explosion in
discrimination, harassment
and retaliation claims in recent years, and then
explained the important legal principles that human resource
professionals and management representatives must understand
in order to deal with discrimination in the workplace,
including:

what harassment is and how to stop it

when and how discrimination occurs

how to draft and communicate effective policies

how to conduct training
-
how to handle employee complaints and investigate claims
thoroughly

how to protect the company with proper documentation
-
what to expect if an employee files a charge or lawsuit
Lyons also provided practical
legal strategies and key information for managers, giving
them the “tools” needed to protect their employees and the
company from workplace harassment and discrimination.
Lyons
has focused his practice in the areas of labor and
employment law on behalf of management in the private and
public sectors. Lyons provides employers with pro-active and
preventative counseling on personnel and benefit issues. He
defends employers in litigation in state and federal courts
and before state and federal administrative agencies. Lyons
also represents employers during contract and grievance
arbitrations and collective bargaining negotiations, defends
unfair labor practice charges, and conducts employee
disciplinary appeal hearings.
